I was blindsided by information I wish I’d never heard. It’s strange how some think gossip helps, but it only wounds. The news cut deep, fueling anger and a craving for justice. I wanted to confront everyone involved—until I turned to the Lord in prayer. Running errands, I stewed, my anger growing with every step.
When I finally got home, I went straight to my bedroom, dropped to my knees, and sought the Lord’s comfort and guidance. Through the Holy Spirit, God revealed two truths. First, I’d been spending less time on my knees. I was praying throughout the day, but I’d shifted from the raw, prostrate prayers of my painful seasons to a more relaxed approach. There’s nothing wrong with that, but for me, kneeling draws me closer to God. Second, I needed to seek godly counsel before acting on this unwanted revelation.
I called my friend and mentor in Christ. He asked questions, prayed with me over the phone, and then surprised me. I expected him to share my anger, but instead, he reminded me that the people involved are new to Christ. He urged me to take the high road and keep this to myself—not what I wanted to hear, but exactly what I needed. After the call, I returned to the Lord in prayer, forgave those involved, and found comfort and peace. God gave me what I needed, not what I wanted.
This trial taught me four lessons:
  1. Don’t make plans without God. “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.” —Psalm 37:5
  2. Seek godly counsel before acting. “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” —Proverbs 12:15
  3. Obey the Lord’s instructions without hesitation, trusting His wisdom. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” —Proverbs 3:5
  4. Forgive quickly to receive forgiveness and healing. “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” —Matthew 6:14
Exercising faith brings me closer to God. The high road is bumpy, and I don’t enjoy the ride, but when it smooths out, the journey leads to a beautiful path.
